Hebrews 10:1

"The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship."

Bible Reading for A Year: Psalms 110; 1 Peter 2; Ezekiel 25-26

It is compulsory for Israelites to sacrifice burnt offerings that sometimes are accompanied by grain offerings. Burnt offerings must be repeated every day (Numbers 28:3-8), every Sabbath day (Numbers 28:9-10), every month (Numbers 28:11-15), and on festival days (Numbers 28:16-29:38). The offerings must be sacrificed by Israelites faithfully at the appointed time that God has assigned (Numbers 28:2) to maintain relationship (fellowship) between Israelites and God.

The burnt offerings are important because all people have sinned in the eyes of God (Romans 3:23), and because forgiveness requires the shedding of blood (Hebrews 9:22). The offerings which are sacrificed every day indicate that the burnt offerings cannot really solve the problem of sin (Hebrews 10:1-2). The sacrifices are merely a shadow or description (symbol) of Lord Jesus’ sacrifice at the cross (Hebrews 9:9-12).

Lord Jesus was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many and need not to be repeated because Lord Jesus’ sacrifice has completely accomplished all demands of God’s holiness (Hebrews 9:27-28). Nothing is required or may be done to enhance what Lord Jesus has done. Lord Jesus’ sacrifice which has completely accomplished human’s problem of sin is the reason why Christians today are no longer sacrifice burnt offerings.
