A Bitter Choice

“I used to date many different guys for thrill. I loved being given attention, I did not want to lose the attention and love from my boyfriends, and for that I was willing to give up everything for them,” Leni Maharani said as she began the story about her own real life experience. This episode of JC Channel, viewed by more than 10 million viewers, features the story of Leni’s past with her husband, Melvin, when they were still in high-school. Unfortunately, the relationship went too far out of boundaries for them, who were still teenagers at that time. And because of that, Leni found herself pregnant and decided to abort it. Yes, the couple resorted to doing abortion. “When I was still lived on my own, free from my parents’ supervision, our relationship got very intensive, and even abortion became normal thing for us to. I had committed abortion 3 times in the past without feeling any guilt,” Leni said as she confessed her past sins. When Leni got pregnant for the fourth time, they decided to get married and raise the baby this time. However, the dream of having a beautiful marriage was somehow impossible to Leni. Instead of happiness, the couple got into fights more often. “I thought at that time, there is no more hope for me, this is the destiny that I have to live with. All the sacrifice I’ve done for him did not guarantee me happiness,” Leni concluded her testimony.
What Leni experienced is not something taboo or uncommon in Indonesia. In fact, 56 million fetuses are aborted every year all over the world. Meanwhile in Indonesia, females aged 19-25 are more likely to commit abortion. Very ironic, isn’t it? In Leni’s story, however, it was stated that the root of her problem was not really abortion, rather her quest to find affection and true love. The same answer was cited by our respondent Eni when asked “Why did you decide to commit abortion?” Eni had been dating a man for 8 years and already planned their wedding down the road. She had even bought a house together with her boyfriend, but one day her boyfriend left her with no clear explanation. The relationship had already gone too far and Eni had been pregnant and committed abortion three times. Growing frustrated and having nobody to share with, Eni desperately looked around for help. But instead of finding relief, Eni only found judgments from people around her. So where can we find this true love that Leni and Eni had been looking for?
The Bible said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16. Doesn’t this mean that Leni, Eni, and you already possess this true love in you as a gift from God? But the abortion they committed was what opened their eyes to this truth. The key to receiving true love is by confessing our mistakes and believing that God’s love is capable of transforming our lives. Thankfully, Leni and Melvin found a good community that can remind them of the importance of the true love of God, so they can find their way to repentance.
