Bible shares about stories of people who do not have choice unless believe in God. Despite He often tests us, God actually can be trusted and He never violates His promise.
When God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his son, God had been testing his faith. Isaac is the covenant son. Abraham should wait for a longer time to get Isaac. After Isaac was born, God wants Abraham to sacrifice his son. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you (Genesis 22:2)
The interesting is, Moriah is literally a same place where God the Father sacrificed Jesus Christ, His Son in Calvary.
Abraham was obedience then “Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.” (Genesis 22:3-4)
Abraham did not need to wait for a longer time to obey what God has said to him. He went in the morning and he has to imagine his son to be sacrificed for 3 days in a row. In fact, many nations have already been promised will be born through this child and the Messiah even will born through his lineage.
It is reasonable if Isaac wondered about that offering. “Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together (Genesis 22:7-8).
What was Isaac thinking about when his body then tied up and he got realized that he would be sacrificed? There is no sign showing that Abraham got doubt or Isaac did any struggles. This is a really difficult test!
However what Abraham said comes true, that God will provide the lamb for the burnt offering. The offering is Jesus Christ, the perfect Lamb of God who becomes the sin offering.
Abraham passed the greatest test in his life while saying, “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” (Genesis 22:12). That’s why Abraham called as the father of the faithful as said in Hebrews 11:17: “By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son.”
James wrote that “You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.”(James 2:22) God tests us not only to know how strong our faith is, but also to know whether our faith grows or not. God always wants to prove the quality of His belonging children.
