Mita Tobing: My True Story as a Moneylender for Gamblers

Janke, that’s what we call a person who lend their money to the gamblers with 1% profits from the total money that s/he has lent. That was what Mita Tobing had been doing for a living.

“I was quite well-known in the gambling society. I could get Rp 50-100 millions in one night for working 1-2 x 24 hours. I was really proud of the result,” said Mita telling the story of her life.

She was even prouder when she was trusted to help those gamblers gambling in houses of gamblers abroad, “I have to full them up with money because of all the facilities: rooms, two-way plane tickets, their meals, their start-up money, everything was my job. Theirs was to sit back and relax like some kind of a king.”

“At the time, I had never felt depressed. I also didn’t feel that it was a sin.”

Yet her family life was nothing like her glamorous job. “As a woman, I also had to be the head of the family because my husband was unemployed. I had to support him too.”

“I didn’t care what he was gonna use the money for. Sometimes I couldn’t give them that much, but I did anyway. I was scared of him because he had once beaten me.”

Not only was she beaten, Mita once saw her husband was intimate with an unknown woman. “I didn’t say anything when he said that I was crazy or anything when he saw me shouting at him in public. I said that there was nothing intimate in our home and I said that because I wanted him to see me as his wife, yet he never did.”

“That was why I felt that I had to support my own life because depending on my husband was impossible.”

Mita’s husband had worked at the same place before Mita took the job. Because of her friend’s persuasion, Mita was sure to go deep in that lost world.

“I was still playing small at the time. And then it grew bigger and bigger until I had the title janke,” said Mita.

As time went by, working as a janke made her financially independent. She could buy everything she and her children wanted. Yet, money did not always bring happiness.

Years and years Mita and her husband had built their family, yet it was like the family was built at the verge of the hellfire. There was no love in it. They were always ignoring each other and fighting each other.

“My husband had never cared about me, so I didn’t care about him either. I thought that there was no point in talking to or with him. It was almost 15 years of living with my husband that I had never even once spoken to him.”

Mita was almost ruined after she found out that everything she had been working for brought nothing to her. Due to her stress, she brought the problems to her sibling.

“I was supposed to follow God, but I kept being stubborn. I attended services everyday, but I was not getting better.”

On the verge of struggling how to live right, this Tapanuli woman experienced a strange event. “Suddenly my belly was getting bigger like I was 8-month pregnant. I was in panic because I didn’t know what had caused it. That was when I finally had to leave my old life. There was no other choice but to leave it behind because it wasn’t how I chose my life to continue.”

“I felt disgusted by my own self, so I came to God and asked Him to help me to help heal my family so I could be a good housewife in my family.”

Helped by her sister, Mita finally chose to leave her sins and returned to God’s path. “I felt very peaceful, happy, and I wasn’t afraid of my life and my children’s lives anymore. I submitted everything to the hand of God.”

A moment after she said that, a miracle happened. Her belly was suddenly getting smaller and smaller.

And not only that, when her husband was dying after that, God worked and healed Mita’s family. They were in tears as they forgave each other. Briefly but sure, they reconciled with each other, and their hearts were pieced together again.

After that, a new life began for Mita, “I cut off any contacts with the people from my previous life even though they came home and tried to get me back. I said no.”

Mita was determined to leave her old life. Now she submits her life to God.

“I had a lot of money but I wasn’t happy because I was living in sins. Now I feel happy even though I am living an adequate life. Yet I still believe that God will take care of me with His glory and wealth. So whatever happens in my life, I will always be happy,” said Mita ending her testimony.
