Inheriting the Wealth of Isaac and Abraham
Lusiana Official Writer
Who would deny wealth? Especially if it comes in substantial amount enough for your seven descendants to spend. Upon being offered such massive amount of wealth, most of us will immediately respond with yes. There is an illusion that possessing a great amount of fortune practically means having an inexhaustible resource; one that we will never run out of. And sometimes it brings another naïve illusion that problems would practically be non-existent before such great fortune. But is that really true? There is a story in the bible of a man of great wealth. But even his wealth did not make him free from hunger that threatened his homeland. Wealth and massive fortune did not protect him from problems. Instead, it was through problem that wealth beyond measure was granted upon him. This man was Isaac.
Isaac's father, Abraham, was a man so wealthy and respected in his time. He was also a very faithful man who put his every action and behavior in submission and obedience to God. No wonder, Abraham was granted wealth by God. Genesis 13:2 clearly mentions about this: “And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.” His wealth would later be inherited by his only son, Isaac, who was born during Abraham’s old age.
However inheriting a substantial fortune from his parents did not make Isaac’s life trouble-free. He still experienced difficult times and was facing the threat of hunger that wiped his land. This served as the reason for Isaac to migrate to Egypt. However, in the middle of his travel, God halted Isaac and requested him to settle at the land where he was at the moment. Isaac obeyed the request of God and built a settlement there as a foreigner to the land. Seeing Isaac’s obedience, Got granted Isaac a hundred times more wealth in the same year. This was mentioned in Genesis 26:13: "And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great.” So what did Isaac do after acquiring so much blessings and wealth from God? He did not abandon the Lord who has granted him everything, and instead he built a temple for worship.
What We May Learn from Isaac
Firstly God responds in kind to those who are obedient, and will provide them with His blessings.
Secondly do not rely on anything or anyone other than God—be it our own ability or power, because they will never guarantee success. It is only by God that our needs will be fulfilled.
Lastly always be grateful and thankful for all the blessings that God has given us.
