True Story: The True Love that Has Been Tested

When Dwi tried to introduce Bethania to his parents, Dwi’s mom forcefully rejected her son and Bethania’s relationship. To Dwi’s mom, Bethania was not a worthy future wife for Dwi, her son. At that time, Dwi was studying in aviation school and he was going to be a pilot with a bright future. Meanwhile, Bethania was not born from honorable family. Moreover, Dwi and Bethania were from two different tribes. However, the rejection from Dwi’s family did not make Bethania give up. She stayed faithful to Dwi and tried hard to keep their relationship as well as possible.

Eventhough his relationship was being rejected by his family, Dwi and Bethania tied to one another. In his daily routines, Dwi’s mind was full of his dreaming of being a pilot. Dwi even promised Bethania that he will fly Bethania to the sky someday.

For the sake of his promise, Dwi sharpened his skills. But on that morning, January 28, 1997, when Dwi was practicing his daily aviation exam, suddenly the plane that was being ridden by him crashed Mount Gede as a result of very thick fog. The whole plane was crashed and burnt. Evacuation team finally arrived on the crash site on 2 p.m. Dwi’s body was found in terrible condition.

That morning, before flying, Dwi told Bethania about his flight plan on that day and promised to communicate with her soon, after landing. However, until 10 a.m., there’s no update from Dwi. Bethania became anxious since Dwi should have arrived in the destination by 8 a.m. Eventually, the phone rang. And Bethania heard the news about the plane crash.

Dwi’s family gave Bethania no information about Dwi’s condition; none at all. Unable to hold the restlessness, 4 days afterwards Bethania came to the hospital where Dwi was taken care. Bethania got no information, instead she was blamed and scolded by Dwi’s family. Bethania was cursed for being a bad luck in Dwi’s life, and Bethania was not permitted to meet Dwi. In addition, one of Dwi’s family members spat on Bethania.

In the deep sadness, Bethania went to hospital’s chapel and prayed. Bethania asked God not to take Dwi’s life. She even made a vow to the Lord that if He let Dwi alive, she promised to faithfully accompany Dwi forver. Right after Bethania finished praying, Dwi was conscious, and he called Bethania, his girlfriend. But Bethanie would never know what will happen in the future.

For the umpteenth time, Bethania and Dwi’s relationship was being tested. But the biggest test was about to come. Dwi’s family finally allow Bethania to meet Dwi. But Bethania could not recognize Dwi’s face no more. The scorch on his face was very horrible. Dwi was very frustrated when he knew that his body was very awful. He became bald-headed, his fingers were deformed. Dwi was disabled from waist to head.

Psychologically, Dwi felt deep sorrow because in three months he should have been graduated from the aviation school. In the hospital, Dwi was identified as the fiercest patient. Dwi frequently scolded the nurses and the doctors as the compensation of his disappointment at his physical condition. His heart was broken because of this tragedy. His hopes and dreams to be a pilot were scattered away.

One time, Dwi had an opportunity to end his life because he could not accept the bitter reality. There were so many questions in his heart, like, why is this happening to me? Dwi became inferior because people always stared at him. But Bethania always encouraged Dwi and promised to always be there for him. The love from Bethania has become Dwi’s strength. Hope arised after Dwi had passes 15 reconstructive surgeries. However, a statement destroyed all these things.

The medical care took much money. The government no longer gave the support money for Dwi’s treatment. Bethania has heard rumor that Dwi’s parents were going to isolate Dwi into remote area. Bethania was not willing if Dwi was treated like that.

Wholeheartedly and bravely, Bethania come to her parents and told them that she wanted to marry Dwi. They absolutely didn’t approve Bethania’s wish. But Bethania insisted—she wanted to marry Dwi because she was not willing if Dwi was isolated. At last, Bethania mustered up courage. She came to Dwi’s parents and at the moment she proposed marriage.

After 25 times of reconstructive surgery and being hospitalized for 1,5 years, Bethania and Dwi were united in holy matrimony on July 17, 1999.

“The confidence didn’t emerge soon. It started to appear 4 years after the crash. The process was not short. I am sure and believe that Ibeth (Bethania’s nickname), which becomes my wife now, is the helper that God has provided in my life. Probably if God didn’t send Ibeth in my life, I would have been mad, or maybe I would have killed myself, or I would have been a someone who doesn’t represent characters and trait as the way I am right now,” Dwi testified about Bethania, his wife.

“I used to aspire to be a pilot, who bring people from one city to another. But through the plane crash and what I have gone through, I do become a pilot, but not the pilot of this world. Instead, I become the pilot of God. When I take part in ministry, many people were encouraged; many people who have been away from God could be back to Him—from darkness to light, from hell to heaven,” Dwi said.

Today, Bethania and Dwi serve people who experience downturn like what Dwi did in the past. Through their true story, they want to prove that only Jesus’ love alone which able to unite them. It’s unconditional love.
