2 Reasons Why Teaching Kids Time Management Is Important

When parenting is concerned, there is a strong connection between teaching kids time-management and shaping their discipline. Getting kids to implement good time management since adolescence can be a very effective way to improve their discipline. According to child psychologist Elizabeth T. Santosa, there are several important reasons why kids should be taught time management from early age:

  • Kids Need to Develop Order and Discipline from Early Age
Kids need to know that there is a benefit in doing activities periodically. Order also helps to prepare them in the future to live a healthy, disciplined, and effective lifestyle. A good example would be to teach them that maintaining good and adequate sleep time is good for their brain development.
  • They Can Familiarize Themselves Quickly with Priority Scale
Kids with good time management will know which task comes first in order or which task is more urgent to perform before anything else. For example: studying, having lunch, and taking bath should be prioritized, as opposed to playing or having fun which can be performed once they have completed all more important activities.

Now what if a kid violates the time management he/she has committed to and has been approved by the family? Elizabeth outlines several suggestions for parents:

  • Punishment vs. Consequence
Refrain from giving them punishment, as it affects them badly. Instead, let them know of the consequence of their actions. Teach them that every decision in life comes with a consequence. Such mindset needs to be introduced to kids since early age. Once discipline is integrated, there should be little resistance and violation, as order and priority will have become a habit for them.
  • Avoid Giving Physical Punishment
Giving physical punishment to kids is far from an effective way of teaching them discipline. Instead, implement consequence-based action. As an example, if they prefer playing to studying, the best course of action to take is reducing their playtime and substituting it with other positive activities like helping in the kitchen or cleaning the house. Changing negative action into a positive one is the most fundamental aspect of consequence-based action.

In early age, parents hold crucial roles in helping them implement and design a good time management. Parents here refer to both father and mother, as both should be equally involved in the process. If parents have come to a mutual agreement on how time management should be, get kids to implement it in their lives.

Since kids mimic and copy rather quickly how their parents behave and act, parents should become good example for their children. Not only time management, parents should also help them to integrate other positive habits. So start from yourself now. Be their example in serving and helping others in need.
