1 Samuel 3:10

"Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel answered, "Speak, for Your servant hears."

Bible Reading for a Year: Proverbs 5; John 15; 1 Chronicles 23-24

Recently I have just read a story about the life of Samuel. He had lived in the Temple of God since he was little. He was the answer to his mother’s prayer who longed for a child, and he was his mother’s vow as well. This mother made a vow that she would give her son if she got a male child. In other words, Samuel has already been called by the Lord to be His servant since he was in the womb.

One night when he was young, Samuel went to sleep. He slept in the holy place where the ark of God was located. The Lord called him, “Samuel! Samuel!” However, he thought it was Eli. God called him for three times, and Samuel ran to Eli for three times, as well. At last, Samuel replied, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.”

I wondered while reading the story of Samuel. Why did not the Lord tell Samuel directly? Why did it take three times to call until the Lord told what He wanted?

In the age of Samuel, vision or the word of God were scarcely heard. Everyone did what seemed right to him. However, the Lord spoke to Samuel. He wanted Samuel to understand that He himself who called him, not Eli. The Lord also wanted Samuel to notice the calling. That’s why the Lord waited for Samuel to know it.

We are called for a noble purpose. But the calling holds the awareness of God’s mighty and His guidance in life. God waits so long that we notice His calling. Start with building the intimacy with God, then He will tell us the awesome things. We will be His servant upon His heart, give inspiration for the people, and get the perfect life.
