Today, woman not only has a role in home and kitchen but also in every single aspect in life. They have equal rights with men. Now they can have any career as what they want unless they have a capability to achieve it. One of women in the Bible that we are supposed to follow is Phoebe. Who is she?
Phoebe, who has a meaning, sparkling, is a servant of God in Kenkrea, a harbor city near to the east Corinthian. As a church leader, Phoebe shows that she has an ability which equals to men.
Even though she is not a Jewish (if it is seen from her name), she is the one who believes in Jesus Christ and her life has been changed. Phoebe is not only a believer but she also has a commitment to serve God. Her presence as a church servant is a proof that she is not only an ordinary Christian but also ‘above the average’, so that she was trusted to be a leader.
In spite of being a leader, Phoebe is a generous woman. She is eager to help anyone. As a result, Paul admitted what she has already done, “For she has been a patron of many and of my self as well.”
Do we have a generosity like Phoebe had? There is saying, “When the wicked dies, his hope will perish, and the expectation of wealth perishes too" (Proverbs 11:7). That’s why the apostle Paul encouraged some believers in Romans to greet and receive her presence well.
