Can We Pray for Those Who Have Passed Away?

The most painful wound comes after being left behind by someone we truly love, especially if it’s forever. There are many things that we can do to love those who have passed away before us, one way to do so is by praying for their souls. However, what is the truth regarding this matter? Can we pray for our loved ones who already passed away with hope that they can find happiness in heaven?

Praying for people who have already passed away is a tradition for certain groups. But the problem is, is it really allowed or not? We need to understand the relationship between those who are still living and dead. According to Ecclesiastes 9:5, there is nothing that connects those who live and those who are already dead. “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten.” Next, we need to understand that the Bible never explicitly states that someone can move from heaven to hell or vice-versa. As laid out in Luke 16:26 “and besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.” Therefore, there is no meaningful effect in praying for those who are already dead.
