Beware of the Illusion of Richness

“Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them?” – Ecclesiastes 5:10-11

Have you ever observed that people who make little money often feel unsatisfied? And yet, even as they are able to make more money, they still don’t feel satisfied. Why? Because as they make more money, they have more demands as well, which have them spend more in the end. Meanwhile, their level of satisfaction remains stuck on the same place: not enough. This can be illustrated with a runner on a treadmill. Despite an increase in running speed, no forward movement is made. The runner remains at a fixed position on the treadmill.

We should always remain cautious of this illusion of happiness, an illusion that somehow gives us the impression that the only way to satisfaction is through hoarding more and more for ourselves. This is a trap! A deception! Listen to God’s words. Happiness shall only be present in the heart of those who are grateful for His blessings. After that we can express that gratitude of ours together through sharing and giving with others. Only through this way, can we be guaranteed satisfaction that far exceeds our own wealth or income.

Those who love sharing, opening up to others, and loving, shall find happiness.
