Fighting against Bullying

Bullying has recently taken the center of focus after a case in one of the high school in Jakarta was blown up. It occurred on April 28th, 2016, when several female students were improperly treated by their seniors. This incident was recorded into a 37-second video and went viral in instagram. The governor of DKI Jakarta, Ahok, even made a statement regarding the case; Ahok assured that the 6 students involved in the bullying case would not be allowed to graduate. Ahok justified himself by saying that grades should not be the only indicator for students to graduate, the students’ characters should also be taken into consideration. Not because of their grades, but characters. They should be expelled immediately,Ahok said, as cited from liputan6.com

This was not the only time a school bullying case was blown up by the media or online portals. CBN Counseling Center have received many confessions via SMS on this very issue. Most of these confessions come from teenagers who happen to become bullying targets in their respective schools. These are some of the texts we receive:

I was being ridiculed and bullied by my female friends. They told me that I am too flirty around boys.  +62878765XXXX

Thank you, Generasi Zeru program has made me more confident to lead my life and daily activities. People who used to bully me are surprised seeing how much I’ve changed. I am really grateful for all the suggestions and inputs by Generasi Zeru. + 28564933XXXX

CBN regards this teenage anxiety as a problem in immediate need of solving. As a 30-minute duration program, Generasi Zeru presents how bad bullying is to its viewers, a majority of whom are youth. Generasi Zeru also aims to revolutionize the outlook of those who happen to be the perpetrators of bullying. It is unlikely that we could get any gratification by bullying someone else. In fact, we can only attain it by respecting other people. There should be a pride in each one of us for being able to carry out our responsibility as God’s children, this was the message delivered by Raditya Oloan, Generasi Zeru’s host, at the end of the program.

The bullying episode was viewed by almost 200,000 viewers on Global TV, Saturday January 23rd, 2016. Generasi Zeru also airs on RTV, although its airtime changed to Saturday every 07.30 per May 14th 2016. We hope that Generasi Zeru can always be a source of inspiration to our youth in order to develop a young generation possessing the good character of Christ.
